Appointments for Lawyers

Attorneys possess special skill sets that facilitate service in publicly appointed positions because they regularly work closely with people of varying perspectives to reach a solution. A legal background gives one familiarity with regulatory systems and application of the law. Such skills and experience make attorneys a strong addition to a group focused on implementing policy or advocating for the creation of regulations and law.

Why Seek Appointment to a Public Position

Appointment to a public position such as a board or commission is a great way to expand an attorney’s professional network. The opportunity often allows one to become an influential representative and serve in a prestigious position. Many positions lead to connecting with leaders in other professions. Taking this type of step can get an attorney’s foot in the door in preparation for entering the public or political arena. Appointed individuals learn about policy-making while serving the community and making a difference.

Selective Service System - Local Board Members

The Selective Service System is looking for men and women in the community who would be willing to serve as local board members. Even though there is no draft today, there is a need to be ready in case a national emergency requires Selective Service to provide additional personnel to augment our volunteer U.S. Armed Forces.

Local board members are citizen volunteers appointed by the Director of the Selective Service System, on behalf of the U.S. President, on recommendations made by their respective state governors or an equivalent public official. If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 local boards throughout the country would decide who among the young men in their community will receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service, based on federal guidelines.

If you are interested or have further questions, please contact Major Richard Gurr of the Selective Service System, San Diego, California 3-4 Detachment, at (760) 815-1221, or visit the agency at www.sss.gov.
